What I Loved About My Trip to the National Museum of Women in the Arts

I’ve had a strong appreciation for the arts for as long as I can remember so visiting the National Museum of Women in the Arts in D.C. was a must. The museum is one of the few that are currently open in D.C. during covid, and strict safety measures are in places without hindering the experience.

The first public opening for the museum was in 1987 and it was founded by Wallace and Wilhelmina Holladay. The museum currently boasts as the only major museum in the world that is completely dedicated to women artists and their work.

There are five floors in total at NMWA and they are filled with exhibits, collections, a library/research center, and a performance hall. Moreover, there is a museum shop on the ground level, a collection room, and super outgoing personnel at the information desks.

My favorite highlight was the Sonya Clark exhibit which paid homage to the versatility and unique intricacies of Black hair.

I was blown away by Sonya Clark’s artistry and ability to use combs, hair, thread, or common day objects to create work that embodied beautiful art.

She also was not afraid to use her creative expressions through statements that challenged adversary while calling out political rhetoric.

The exhibit left me feeling proud of my curly crown distinguished for its own unique patterns and changeability.

Here are some other pics from the various exhibits and highlights throughout NMWA:

“There isn’t enough time there, isn’t enough nothing. There is only reality. What once was is long gone! What remains, are the transparent roots appearing transformed into an eternal fruit tree Your fruits already give scent your flowers give color blooming in the joy of wind and flower.” – Frida Kahlo
