Why You Should Visit the Enchanting Greek Village of Emporio

The Greek village of Emporio is amongst one of the largest villages in Santorini and it is quite a majestic sight to see. Within the village remains the ruins of a castle that was built by Venetians who lived on the island during the 15th century.

Emporio used to be the exportation hub in Santorini, and the castle was built so that the Venetians could see pirate invaders from afar. The homes within the village are very close together and this was because the residents wanted to easily be able to hear if there was an attack brewing from around the bend.

There was a catastrophic earthquake on the island of Santorini back in the 50’s and many inhabitants decided to abandon their properties and the island as a result. In time, Santorini started to grow immense popularity among tourists and many Santorians decided to head back home and capitalize on their properties.
