How I Enjoyed a Quick Getaway to Syros, Greece

Did you know that there are close to 6,000 Greek islands and islets?

Syros is an island after my own heart with it’s relaxed charm, pastel colored building structures, performing arts, and little crowds.

I’ve only lived in the Greek isles for about 3 months, and I already can tell that Syros is quite the hidden gem. The island is the capital of the Cyclades Islands and is a 3 hour ferry ride from Santorini.

The main religion in Greece is Greek Orthodox. So it was interesting to learn that the islands inhabitants were split between Catholic and Greek Orthodox. On one side of the island its quite easy to look up and see the main Catholic church and on the other side there is a large Greek Orthodox church. I am glad to report that both religious groups are able to live harmoniously amongst each other on this beautiful island in Greece.

Prior to arriving, I was told that many plays and exhibits took place on the island and that is was home to the prestigious University of the Aegean.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t in town for long enough to see many attractions. However, on one night, I heard many children and live music playing from The Lion King soundtrack coming from the direction of Mialoui Square.

My inner child caused me to rush to the balcony of my hotel that night as I enjoyed the music, warm temperature, and Aegean breeze against my skin.

I was mainly in town to handle some business regarding my residence permit and I’m happy that it went very smoothly.

My time spent on the island was short but I’m already looking forward to coming back to see more of what sets this island apart.

P.S. – You should travel to Syros, Greece and do yourself a favor by visiting Tsipouradiko Tis Mirsinis. It’s the best restaurant in Syros with its great quality Greek food, good service, and gorgeous antique and rustic appeal.
