Traveling Back in Time at Tudor Place in Washington, D.C.

Historical landmarks are abundant here in Georgetown with Tudor Place firmly impressed amongst the top for its timeless aesthetic and distinction. From the outside, Tudor Place looks like a home situated in a large park as it sits on 5.5 acres of large trees, gardens, and grass for as far as the eye can see.

The rooms at Tudor Place are exactly what you would expect from a federal-style mansion home from the early 1800’s. The rooms are adorned with everything from fine china, furniture, paintings, old collection pieces that belonged to past family members, and so much more.

Speaking of family, the estate formerly belonged to Martha Custis Peter and Thomas Peter. Martha was best known as the step-granddaughter of George Washington. According to tudorplace.org, the six generations of Peters who lived there were witnesses to a ceaseless parade of events that shaped the nation, including the burning of Washington in 1814, slavery, the Civil War, both World Wars and the Cold War.

Public record shows that the Peter family inherited 100 slaves at the Tudor Place location and there were also domestic servants on the premises. You can find more information about those enslaved at Tudor Place and the emancipation of slavery in Washington, D.C. here along with information about the domestic servants here.

The gardens of the residence are a highlight for many visitors as they are still carefully curated and well kept until today.

Tudor Place tours, parties, and educational visits are some of the few ways that visitors can stop by to partake in this hallmark of American history. Tudor Place weddings are also possible for those looking for a special setting on their memorable day.

I personally was happy to see how the old residence is used for special events and educational purposes to enlighten visitors about our history while having conversations about our today and the trajectories of our future.

Have you unlocked any historical finds this summer?
